Manistee Fishing Reports

July 4, 2013

Reports have neen very slow this past week with cold water and scattered fish.  The one bright spot has been some decent Lake Trout fishing to the north with some big fish.  Here is one that was caught while our member Capt Bob Guenthardt was fishing on the Happy Wanderer this week.  The offical weight was 27.25  WOW what a trout.

Fishing is beginning to improve with some nice Kings coming near the point and a few straight out.  Offshore fishing has improved a bit also with some Lakers and Steelhead coming near the surface starting at the 28 line west.  North winds the next few days are sure to change the fishing once again and hopefully bring in some cool water under the warmer water.  The one common report is that there are lots of fish and lots of bait.

Sorry for the lack of reports but to be honest fishing has been very slow and there hasn't been a lot to report.  With the steady south wind we are now getting and the reports from the southern part of the lake improving along with the tournament this weekend we should have some improving fishing and good reports after the weekend.

Fishing continues to improve with some Big Kings showing up.  Several fish last week were taken near the 20# mark and the numbers are getting better all the time.  Recently the fishing has been better in 100-200 feet with the fish coming from 50-160 down.  Big flasher fly combos and meat rigs are doing well as are spoons on copper and leadcore or as free sliders on riggers.  South winds will keep bringing more fish in.

The long cool spring has put a damper on the early King fishing in Manistee but it should bust loose any day as more fish are showing up with some over 20#  This past weekend was the annual Tight Lines for Troops tourney with 60 boats participating.  The average catch for the fleet was around 2 fish with the best catch 8 fish and the big fish 22.6#.  The best fishing seemed to be in waters 200-300 feet deep and 100-200 down on spoons and flasher/fly or meat combos.  Good Fishin!

Weather has made it tough to get out so far this spring but when you can there are a few Browns and Lake Trout being caught.  Today we took 5 in a short trip with all of our fish coming on spoons to the south in 5-10 feet of water while others were catching a few to the north.  Stable weather the next few days should help if the wind stays down.  Good Fishin!
